How the race works in 10 easy steps

  1. Six person teams run or walk 61.9 miles from Stanley to Ketchum. The scenery is stunning.
  2. Athletes complete 12 legs which average 5 miles per leg.
  3. Athletes complete their legs in rotation, so athlete 1 completes legs 1 & 7, athlete 2 completes legs 2 & 8, etc.
  4. Athletes run or walk on the right side of the road.
  5. Athletes hand off the wristwrap/baton at specific locations on the course called exchanges.
  6. One automobile per team is allowed on the course.
  7. Toilets are available at each exchange. Teams provide all other support (food, water, first aid) to their athletes.
  8. Teams finish in the park together. Plan to celebrate at the post-relay party. Stay and play for the weekend.
  9. Local teams are required to provide a volunteer to assist the relay organization on race day. Paying for your volunteer's meals and/or lodging will ensure they want to return to help next year.
  10. Think "That was fun, Must do again next year."
